What are GCSEs?

The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) an academic qualification, in a particular subject, taken in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Students begin preparing for their GCSEs in years 10 and 11 (ages 14 - 16), choosing their GCSE options in year 9 and exams held at the end of year 11.

There is an element of freedom when it comes to which subjects are studied at GCSE. Three core subjects of English, maths and science are compulsory, with all other subjects being optional. How many subjects are taken at GCSE varies amongst schools and can be as many as 12 or as little as 7, and aside from the compulsory subjects of English, maths and science, students choose from the remaining subjects in year 9 and may include the following:

  • The arts (art and design, music, dance, drama and media arts).

  • Physical education (PE)

  • Religious Studies (RE)

  • Design and Technology (electronics, food technology, graphics, resistance materials, systems and control, textiles and product design).

  • The humanities (geography and history).

  • Modern foreign languages (French, Spanish and German).

What do GCSEs Mean for the Future?

Whilst GCSEs provide students with a structured set of skills and knowledge that can enhance their understanding of how the world works, including transferrable skills, subjects chosen can also have a bearing on a student's future. This could include a demonstration of aptitudes to prospective employers or in support of applications to further education. Whatever the path, our GCSE tutors at Performance Tutors can also support and provide guidance in making the right choices that suit each student and their chosen path.

How are GCSEs Graded?

Previously, GCSE students were awarded grades between A* (highest grade) to G (lowest grade). However, that's in the past, and has been replaced with levels from 9 (highest level) to 1 (lowest level). Here is how the current level system compares to the old grading system:

  • Grade 9 – The top mark is even higher than the old A*

  • Grade 8 – Below an A* but above an A

  • Grade 7 – Slightly below an A but only just

  • Grade 6 – Slightly better than a B

  • Grade 5 – Below a B but above a C. Also called a ‘strong pass’

  • Grade 4 – Equivalent of a C. Also called a ‘standard pass’

  • Grade 3 – Below a D but above an E

  • Grade 2 – Between an E and an F

  • Grade 1 – Between an F and a G

  • Ungraded - The lowest mark possible. As in the old system, a U denotes a fail
